Which Window Treatments Are the Most Privacy Friendly?

April 30, 2018

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you’re like most homeowners, finding window treatments in Jacksonville that add privacy and noise control to maintain your castle is a top consideration. Any window covering is preferable to a naked window. Yet there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, even on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Non-Square Windows

All of the large, rectangular windows in your house are easy to cover with just about any window treatment like Jacksonville shutters, shades, or blinds.

However, there are some situations when you need a specific style of window treatment to achieve the level of privacy you need. These could be:

  • Windows in the bathroom where water and humidity might ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are long and thin where window treatments can be pushed around when the door opens or shuts.

  • Specialty-shape windows such as transoms, circular windows, bay windows, etc., where conventional store-bought blinds and drapes can’t cover your window without covering up the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that are impossible to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you want window treatments that go above and beyond to add privacy to your house.

As a plus, look for window treatments that offer good sound control to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Top Window Coverings for Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is your goal. If you want to let light in and see outdoors, just tilt the louvers. For taller windows, you can always keep the louvers tilted at an angle so light can enter but passersby can’t see in.

Plantation shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are water resistant, they’re an excellent choice for bathrooms.

Another privacy-friendly window treatment is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be custom-made to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in water resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window treatment adds a minimum amount of privacy, there are two that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a breezy feeling to a room. Yet they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, especially at night.

Another window treatment we don’t recommend for privacy are aluminum or bulky blinds, which can bend or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t close the blinds all the way because of breakage, then they’re not providing much privacy at all.
